Conan The Barbarian

Mongol General: Hao! Dai ye! We won again! This is good, but what is best in life?
Mongol: The open steppe, fleet horse, falcons at your wrist, and the wind in your hair.
Mongol General: Wrong! Conan! What is best in life?
Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women.
Mongol General: That is good! That is good.

Top 10 Songs of 2008

10. Deerhunter - Nothing Ever Happened / Times New Viking - Call and Respond

I'm liking these two bands sounds - they are probably the first bands that are my age and I really respect.

9. Erykah Badu - Soldier

Erykah Badu. Not only is this track fucking awesome, it is followed by another fucking awesome track on her fucking awesome CD, and not only does she live in my neighborhood, but she named her son, who she had with Andre 3000, "Seven." And we all know who wanted to name his son "Seven"...

8. Grouper - Heavy Water/I'd Rather Be Sleeping

I thought this song was pretty sexy. If I had to describe it, its like saying goodbye to your Portugese girlfriend on the beaches of Lisbon on a summer morning, and since there's really nothing else to say, you just eat Skittles together.

Side note: the sexiest song I heard all year was Todd Rundgren's "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference" which made me want to throw a roller skating party. If you haven't heard it, it deserves a listen.

7. Fucked Up - Son The Father

Really sad I missed the 12 hour concert this fall, the voices of everyone in this song sound amazing. They also seem like pretty cool people, the whole album is awesome.

6. The B.P.A. - Toe Jam

2008 thanks you very much, David Byrne. Wasn't sure why this wasn't the hit of the summer... but this video was delicious.

5. Magnetic Fields - Too Drunk To Dream/ Silver Jews - Candy Jail

These two hilarious songs are not only great, but they probably are not even the best songs on their respective albums, which are also fantastic. They also just prove that these two guys are not going anywhere anytime soon - they still pull out the hits.

4. Usher - Love In This Club

This song would not have reach this high if it wasn't 1) discovered that it was just two samples that came loaded in GarageBand and 2) lucky enough to have this music video. I think Usher is pretty fascinating and I think we can all enjoy this song on really any level.

3. TV on the Radio - Crying / Hot Chip - Ready For The Floor

These songs occupied the same space in my mind... I felt like the songs were so simple but were just nailed. Also very danceable, which will keep them relevant for far longer then they should be.

2. David Byrne & Brian Eno - Strange Overtones

This song was... just better than anything (except number 1). Byrne's voice is still the most interesting thing out there, I'm hoping we'll get to see more of him in 2009. Also his performance of Paul Simon's "I Know What I Know" at BAM this March blew Paul Simon out of the water.

1. Animal Collective - Water Curses

I hear this song and I feel like I'm listening to the future of music. Hands down best song of the year.
